Helping Hands Sessions Start

Some 20+ years ago The Boeing Employees Computer Club was formed by a group of people who wanted to get and share help in buying, assembling and running computers.  We joined in group buys to get good deals.  We got together to assemble modem kits, I think I still have mine, and shared solutions to our computer problems.  The meetings were a time for ‘newbes’ to get help and the ‘experts’ to show off their Vast Knowledge.

Today computers come assembled, modems are sealed boxes or are already in the system.  But people still have problems with their systems.  People still look for great deals and lower prices for their computers.  Those computers still have to be hooked up; modems have to be added to your network.  People get lots of software that they need help with. And yes, ‘experts’ still like to show off.

So in a move to return to our roots, BECS, yes we are a Computing Society now, will be hosting one hour long Helping Hand sessions prior to the main BECS meeting.  The first session will be Feb 18th at 6:00 PM in Room C.  This is the room across the hall from the main meeting room.   These sessions are open to members with computer hardware or software problems.  I hope to have one or more ‘experts’ at each session to come up with answers.   We may have an initial suggested topic area such as ‘how to set up a LAN at home’.  But there will be time for lots of questions and answers.

For the Feb 18th session the suggested topic will be what can BECS do to help?  I would also like to see some ‘experts’ show up so we can get some answers.

If these Helping Hand sessions take off, we may move and grow into a new SIG with a separate meeting time and longer sessions.
