About BECS ...

BECS (Boeing Employees’ Computing Society) was founded in 1978, when a number of Boeing employees formed a Boeing- sponsored society, interested in building their own computers, learning more about software programs and facilitate the exchange of information. BECS activities are at the Kent Activity Center in Kent at 22643 83rd Ave S.

BECS keeps members current on new developments and helps them solve computer and software problems. Not only are we concerned with computer education but our SIGs provide a forum about many aspects of computers, software and related areas of interest. Our meetings also are a source of friendship and fellowship with people who have common interests.

BECS offers the following functions and benefits to its members:

  • General Meeting: These meetings are every third Monday of the month in Room B and often feature software and hardware representatives from companies within the industry, such as Microsoft, Intuit, Adobe, Intel, Apple, etc. The presentations are intended to inform members about new products and educate them on computing techniques. Door prizes are a regular feature of these meetings and discounts on software may be offered.
  • Helping Hands: These sessions are held in Room C before the General Meetings to provide discussion and exchange ideas and solutions to computer and software problems and concerns.
  • Computer Lab: The computer lab contains both PC and Apple computers as well as photo scanners, printers and projectors. There is also a computing books and videos library as well as Internet web access.
  • SYSOPS support: A number of knowledgeable System Operators (SYSOPS) are available to assist members learn specific functions and operate equipment.
  • Special Interest Groups (SIGs): The BECS SIGs focus on computer special interests. These include Digital Imaging, Macintosh (Apple), Linux, mutual funds programs, Windows, Games, and Retirees.
  • BECS Newsletter: Our award winning monthly newsletter (Computing Notes)  is a regular source of articles about using and understanding computers and software. It summarizes special interest group activities and is a source for computer hardware bargains. The newsletter often carries articles written by members who have evaluated software or hardware provided by our vendors.
  • BECS Board of Directors: The Board of Directors meetings are held in Room C of the Kent Activity Center on the fourth Wednesday of each month. These start at 6:00 p.m. and are open to all BECS members. Club officers are there to discuss all club activities, schedule events, appoint action committee members, and to authorize purchase of club equipment and software. Because this cuts too deeply into most people’s dinner hour, pizza is provided at these meetings.

Membership is extended to all Boeing employees and retirees, plus contractors and U.S. Government representatives who are currently working at Boeing, and include their immediate family. Dues are $18 a year for employees and contractors and $12 for Boeing retirees.
